Genuine Student Test (GST) – What Replaced the GTE Requirement
Overview
The Genuine Student Test (GST) replaced the Genuine Temporary Entrant (GTE) requirement from 23 March 2024. It introduces a more structured assessment of whether an applicant is a genuine student seeking quality education in Australia.
What Changed?
The previous Genuine Temporary Entrant (GTE) requirement assessed whether an applicant intended to stay temporarily. The new Genuine Student Test shifts focus to whether the applicant is genuinely motivated to study and whether the chosen course aligns with their circumstances.
Key Assessment Criteria
Under the GST, applicants must provide a written statement addressing:
Current circumstances in their home country, including ties and reasons for studying abroad
Why they chose Australia and their specific education provider
How the course aligns with their previous education and work experience
How the course will benefit them upon return to their home country or in their career
Why they did not choose a similar course in their home country

Prepare a detailed, genuine written statement — generic or templated responses are flagged
Ensure logical course progression — downgrading from a higher qualification may raise concerns
Demonstrate financial capacity and genuine ties to your home country
Provide supporting documents including academic transcripts, employment records, and career plans
Warning
Failure to satisfy the Genuine Student Test will result in visa refusal. The Department has increased scrutiny on course-hopping and applicants who appear to be using the student visa pathway primarily for work or migration purposes.
